Education

  • Recognized by the Association of American Medical Colleges as having one of the strongest medical education programs in North America.
  • The COM widely recognized as the originator of mission-based budgeting, now termed mission-based management by the AAMC.
  • The COM initiated the concept of common competencies for undergraduate and graduate medical education programs.
  • The Human Patient Simulator was invented by our Department of Anesthesiology.
  • COM is among the first medical schools in the U.S. to use patient “actors” to simulate patient care for students and for performance-based evaluation.

Research

  • College of Medicine obtained 43% of UF’s total extramural research awards for FY 2006.
  • Cancer & Genetics Institute (opened Spring 2006).
  • Strategic recruitment ongoing in areas of cardiovascular disease/hypertension, diabetes, immunogy, urology, neuroscience and emerging pathogens.
  • 60 faculty members recruited for the Cancer Center since 1999 with equal representation in basic and clinical research.

Patient Care

  • Patient care occurs at 2 principal locations: Gainesville and Jacksonville.
  • Faculty in both locations account for 1 million physician visits and 74,000 discharges annually.
  • Programmatic strength lies in cancer, neurosciences, aging, gene therapy, transplantation and children’s services.
  • A major goal is to achieve National Cancer Institute designation as a comprehensive cancer center by 2010.
  • Cancer treatment will be greatly enhanced by the new proton beam radiation therapy facility which opened in July 2006 in Jacksonville.
