Education
- In 2003, the College became the home for public health at the University of Florida. The College seeks to be designated as an accredited college of public health.
- The college is comprised of seven departments: behavioral science and community health, clinical and health psychology, communicative disorders, epidemiology and biostatistics, health services research, management and policy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. The college also has divisions of environmental health and rehabilitation counseling. In addition to discipline specific programs, the College offers three interdisciplinary degree programs: the bachelor of health science, master of public health and Ph.D. in rehabilitation science.
- PHHP and Veterinary Medicine recently established a joint degree program (DVM/MPH), and our college is working with the College of Medicine to establish a joint MD/MPH program
- The college was recently approved to offer a collaborative MPH program with Tsinghua University in Bejing, China.
- Audiology, physical therapy, and public health faculty and students are reaching across borders to help Latin and South American countries in need of health care services and education.
Research
- The college’s research funding has almost doubled over the past five years.
- The college’s research program is ranked among the top colleges in our fields in federal research funding.
- Clinical psychologists are fighting the national obesity crisis through community intervention research demonstrating effective weight management counseling.
- Physical therapy scientists are engaged in cutting edge translational research on neural plasticity and motor recovery.
- Communicative disorders researchers are completing a clinical trial involving electrical stimulation, one of the newest methods for treating swallowing disorders after stroke.
- The National Older Driver Research and Training Center, lead by occupational therapy, is the only center in the country dedicated exclusively to older drivers.
- Researchers in health services research, management and policy are evaluating Florida’s Medicaid reform policies at the request of AHCA.
Patient Care
- The communicative disorders department provides all speech, language, and audiology services for Shands Healthcare and is expanding clinics at Hampton Oaks, Oak Hammock, Shands at AGH, Ayers Medical Plaza, and Magnolia Park.
- Faculty in the clinical and health psychology department provides psychological services for the entire Health Science Center and has expanded to include a satellite clinic at Park Avenue and HSC Jacksonville.
- OT and PT provide assessments and treatment throughout multiple school districts and at Tacachale for individuals with developmental disabilities.
