LAPTOP SUPPORT AND SETUP

NO GHOST IMAGE

1. Verify contents of laptop box (power and data cables, CD-ROM, floppy disk drive, win98se disks, pcmcia card(s) and manuals.
2. Use boot disk to erase all information on the drive and create a maximum size fat16 partition.
3. Format the partition and restart computer with CD ROM support, copy win98 folder from CD-ROM to the hard drive (c:\windows\options\cabs). Also copy the appropiate Novell Cleint folder to the hard drive (from the Assimilator CD).
4. Make sure the CD-ROM drive is inserted on the laptop while the floppy drive is connected externally.
   
5. install win98Se (portable install)
• Answer NO to SCSI and PC card questions
• Set correct time and date
• Upon completion, DO NOT enter a Windows password (just leave blank and hit OK)
6. After windows 98Se starts up, click on the proper box to disable the Win98 Splash screen from coming up every time.
7. Delete from the desktop the following:
• On line services
• MSN
• Connect to the internet

Delete from the START à Programs Menu:

• On line Services

Delete from c:\Program Files

8. Go to Windows Explorer and Click on View:
• Change view to DETAILS
• Disable View AS WEB PAGE
• Go to Folder Options:
• Click on the VIEW tab and click on Like Current Folder button. (then YES)
• On the same tab, select SHOW ALL FILES
9. Go to START---Programs and Right click on Windows Explorer and CREATE SHORTCUT.
• Drag the shortcut from the Programs to the little toolbar at the bottom left of the screen
• Drag the Outlook Express Icon (the little blue and white) OUT of the toolbar and into the trash can.
10. Go to the Control Panel and click on System à Device Manager à Click on the little (+) and select the correct CD-ROM drive and click PROPERTIES.
• From the SETTINGS tab, select the drive letters to be Z: Hit OK and restart computer.
11. Insert the DELL System Disk and using windows explorer browse to the WIN98 folder:
• Go to the AUDIO folder and click on SETUP (This will install the audio drivers)
  
• Restart Computer
• Go to the VIDEO folder and click on SETUP (This will install the audio drivers)
• Restart Computer
12. Install Ethernet/Modem drivers as the Manufacturer’s instruction indicate (varies from one another)
13. From the UF Software CD install:
• Netscape Communicator

Complete email/news settings

Clear realplayer/aol icons from desktop

Update Realplayer G2 (automatic after registration)

• Hummingbird Host Explorer

Create shortcut to NERDC

• WS-FTP
• Acrobat Reader
• Quick time
14. Install Microsoft Office 97 SR-2
• Choose Custom Install and click on SELECT ALL
• After installation completes DELETE the OUTLOOK shortcut from the desktop.
15. Install the Novell client using the Assimilator CD.
16. McAfee Antivirus
• Update virus definitions
