Computer set up for DOCOM

  • Verify that computer system has an entry in inventory database, \\Gore\SHARE\itccs\inventory\INVENTOR.xls , and modify it or create one if necessary

  • Use the following link http://www.health.ufl.edu/itcenter/sa/serverstats.shtml and go to Maintenance Space to find volume on a server for backup Important: verify if there is any available space on the server before backing up the files.

  • Verify and save information on printer settings ( optional)

  • Verify and save information on drive mapping if upgrading from Windows 9x to NT

  • Locate a correct ghost image for the computer you will work on or create a new one. Ghost images for DOCOM computers can be found in the following locations : \\Marin\VOL_NSX_3\Old Images or \\Salk\VOL_NSX\Images or \\Salk\VOL_NSX_2\Backups .

  • Use ‘Ghost Disk’ to ghost a computer and log on as ‘backup’ user

  • Register NIC for DHCP services and test IP ( if necessary)

  • Verify status of the device drivers and install updates if necessary. Check \\Calhoun\LOCAL\WinFiles folder for necessary software or download the latest versions from internet sites ( for Gateway go to http://www.gatewayatwork.com/gw_atwork/support/product/drivers/index.shtml and for Dell go to http://support.dell.com/us/en/filelib/index.asp )

    Windows 9x

  • Upgrade Novell Client if necessary. NWC and other software can be found in \\Calhoun\LOCAL\WinFiles folder.

  • Verify software versions and upgrade if necessary ( Netscape, Acrobat Reader, etc.)

  • Update McAfee antivirus program DAT files and scan engine if necessary

  • Login to the network using customer’s user ID ; DNS context needs to be set to ‘dean.med.hsc.ufl’ and in server field enter ‘Osler’

  • Move ‘My Documents’ folder from local drive to H: drive and run Regedit.exe

    Windows NT v.4.0

  • Verify and save drive mapping information if upgrading from Windows 9x to NT ( optional)

  • First time logon to NT computer as Administrator with user Netware ID and do not change NT password to match Netware password. In login window choose Advanced button and under DNS tab change context to ‘dean.med.hsc.ufl’ and server to ‘Osler’

  • Create an administrative user account with the same UserID/Password as the netware account by copying the local administrator account in User Manager; make sure the checkbox ‘Password Never Expires’ is the only block checked

  • Change Computer Name in Network Properties to ‘USERID_NT’ , verify TCP/IP properties and restart computer

  • Second time logon as ‘UserID’ and under NT tab in Advanced option of the login window change ‘Local username’ to ‘UserID’ and in ‘From’ field select ‘USERID_NT’. This time NT login window should not appear.

  • Verify drive mapping , run ZenWorks installers and restart computer

    Windows 9x and NT

  • Transfer the backup data and configure the desktop if necessary ( Netscape bookmarks and settings, network properties, desktop shortcuts, etc.)

  • Install printer drivers and test printing ( if necessary test printing from Pegasus Mail)

  • Configure and test Pegasus Mail and Netscape Communicator

  • Install custom applications
