Using WS-FTP for FTP on the ITCenter's Servers

** Configuration **

Start WS-FTP, click New then fill in the boxes as shown, then click OK:

The User ID box is your fully described UFL Tree user ID or Gatorlink ID as the case may be.

Example #1 -- a customer having an account in the Dean's Office would have an ID in the format as follows:

.userid.dean.med.hsc.ufl

Be sure to include a period "." in front of the user ID text string.
The Password box is your "at the office" password.

Example #2 -- a customer authenticating with their Gatorlink account should format their ID as follows:

.myuserrid.M.users.ufl

The format is ".", Gatorlink ID, ".", the first letter of your GLink ID then ".USERS.UFL"
Be sure to include a period "." in front of the user ID text string.
the format is period The Password box is your Gatorlink password.

Please be aware that it is a security risk to check the Save Pwd box.

Contact your departmental computing coordinator or ITCenter Help Desk if you have any questions about your User ID or the correct formatting.

** Connecting **

First, establish your internet connection via Gatorlink or your ISP.

Next, open WS-FTP and select the session profile you built under ** Configuration**.

Finally, enter your password and click Ok. You should see something like this with the Remote System box having the content of your home directory on your primary server in the UFL Tree (GLink customers should see //ncs_one_web_server/web/www.med.ufl.edu/public/):

The various volumes, directories and files are shown in a format similar to the Window Explorer. Click on the "Up Arrow . ." to go up in the directory tree of either the server or your local computer. Clicking on a file or drive icon will take you into that area.

Files are moved between the two sites by selecting the file you want to move and then clicking on the appropriate "ß " or "à ".

You can also perform other file and directory functions using the buttons along the right side of the respective display windows.

** Other Tips **

A) It is possible to access any server on the UFL Tree if you have been given appropriate access by the administrators of the server in question.

To access a different server, click ChgDir and enter the name of the target server and volume as follows then click OK:

\\server\volume

Remember to put two "\" in front of the server name.

B) Most of us go to a single place on our server for most of our FTP transfers. You can set the defaults for the WS-FTP client so that it will automatically go to the same startup location at the beginning of each session. Simply move around the file system until you get the two windows, local and remote, at the desired locations. Then click Options, Save Current Directories as Connection Directories and OK. This will bring you back to this location at your next login.

C) If you have two or three locations where you do most of your work, you can set up multiple Session Profiles with a different startup directory setting for each one. However, please not that if you want to have the startup directory on a server other than your home server, you will need to manually edit the WS_FTP.INI file on your PC to include the name of the remote server as shown above.
