HSC list header tips

The information presented below was obtained through experience, from tips provided by NERDC's ListServ managers and others, and documentation available at lists.ufl.edu. The information presented here includes commands and settings typically used in lists managed by the IT Center's list management team (itclmgt-l@lists.ufl.edu). Apply these commands by copying and pasting the desired setting while using the "Edit list configuration" function in NERDC's list management application.

Send=Private
Only list members can send notes

Subscription=Open,Confirm
Anyone w a valid address may join.

Notify=No
If Notify= is set to 'Yes", list owners are alerted when new members self-subscribe or unsubscribe. Not applicable when Subscription=By_Owner is in effect.

Review=Private
Only list members can review membership address.

Editor=(ListName-L)
List editors (and owners) are allowed to send messages directly to a list regardless of other settings. This entry demonstrates the format which must be used if a list (ListName-L@lists.ufl.edu in this example) is named as an editor.

Editor=valid-ID@ufl.edu
Normal format for identifying a particular individual as a list editor.

Notebook=Yes,/var/listserv/archives/ListName-L,yearly,Public
Messages sent to this list will be archived in a web-accessible format for review.

Digest=Yes,Same,Daily
This keyword controls the automatic digestification function allowing subscribers who do not have the time to read large numbers of messages as they arrive to subscribe to a digestified or indexed version of the list. The list owner decides whether digests are available or not, the frequency at which they are issued and the day of week or time of day when the digest should be distributed. Digests are larger messages containing all the postings made by list subscribers over a certain period of time.

Reply-to=sender
List members choosing to reply to a message delivered by a list will have their To: field automatically filled with the address of the individual who sent the original message. The default option is for replies to be sent back to the list itself.

Confidential=Yes
Indicates whether the list should be hidden from users or not. A confidential list will not appear on the "Lists" command output. "Confidential= Yes" means that the list is unconditionally confidential.

Files=No
Files= has absolutely no effect under the non-NJE versions of LISTSERV. Specifically it will not prevent users from sending "attached" (MIME-encoded) files to lists. It is provided under all versions for backwards compatibility.

Errors-To=Owners,list-errors@lists.ufl.edu
Send errors to the list's owners and ListServe managers.

Language=NoHTML
Do not support HTML messages; effectively forces the use of plain text which can be read by all mail readers.

Auto-Delete= Yes,Semi-Auto
Subscribers will be automatically deleted from this list when delivery errors have been reported for 4 days or more, or when 100 delivery errors have been received, whichever occurs first.

Service=*.UFL.EDU,UFL.EDU
Defines the service area by including anyone in the University of Florida's domain. This statement can work in combination with the Send= command (e.g., Send=Service) to allow messages to be sent to the list by anyone using a University-based e-mail address.

Subject-Tag=CoM-Announcement
This single-word variable (i.e., "CoM-Announcement") works in cooperation with the Default-Options=subjecthdr command. The result of these two settings is to force the phrase [CoM-Announcement] into the subject line of any message sent to this list.

Default-Options=subjecthdr
See preceding Subject-Tag= explanation

Attachments=No,Filter
This setting causes messages submitted with attached files to be passed on to list members without the attachment. The sender is not told their file was not passed on. The only alternatives are to allow attachments (apply with care!) or to block both the attachment and the message with which it was submitted (Attachments=No). This version of the command will advise the sender of the action.

default-options=repro
Add this statement to ensure list members who successfully send a message to the list, receive a copy of their own message without needing to cc: themselves. Sending a message to listserv@lists.ufl.edu containing the command quiet set ListName repro for *@* (where ListName is the name of the list without the @lists.ufl.edu) will apply the change to all members of an existing list. Don't include a signature block on the message.

Owner=UserID@ufl.edu
Normal list owner statement where UserID@ufl.edu represents an individual's address..

Owner= Quiet:
Any owners following this command, will not receive error messages. Although it probably isn't necessary, we've adopted the practice of placing this command at the bottom of the header so the only possible impact will be on the next Owner= statement.

Owner=(ListName-L)
The parenthesis marks are required to refer to another list in the owner or editor statements. Because this statement follows the Owner= Quiet: statement, this owner will not receive error messages associated with membership addresses.

Because NERDC's ListServ administrators manage lists for the entire campus, we believe it's a good idea to modify the default text created by the list request process by adding more descriptive contact information.

A list that is being moderated will include the following commands: Messages sent to a list configured with these setting examples will be forwarded automatically to both moderators. The message is distributed only if the moderator chooses the "Reply" function, types the letters ok and "Sends" their response. If multiple moderators are empowered, all will receive a copy of the message. Only the first moderator who responds will actually send the note, so there is no chance multiple copies of the same message can be sent to list members.

Send=Editor,Hold
Editor=User-1-ID@ufl.edu, User-2-ID@vpha.health.ufl.edu
Moderator=all,User-1-ID@ufl.edu,User-2-ID@vpha.health.ufl.edu

Moderator= defines which editors of a moderated list receive postings for forwarding to the list. The default is the first editor as defined by the "Editor=" keyword. If multiple moderators are defined, the load is spread across them. Note that all editors may still post directly to the list, but only those editors defined by "Moderator=" will have messages from non-editors forwarded to them. If the parameter "All" is coded before the list of moderator addresses, LISTSERV will send copies of all postings to all moderators, any of whom may approve the message.
