College of Medicine Interim Dean
Jun 06 2008Douglas J. Barrett, M.D.
Sr. Vice President, Health Affairs
Friday, Dr. Michael L. Good was appointed interim dean of the College of Medicine, effective immediately.
The selection of Dr. Good follows discussions with many, many people around the college as well as consultation with President Machen. I appreciate all the comments I received in support of a number of informal qualified candidates. We are fortunate to have several very capable leaders to choose from and my selection of Dr. Good in no way diminishes the stature of others who were considered.
Dr. Good, a 20-year veteran of the faculty, is a proven leader who enjoys the respect and support of people throughout the college. His experience has prepared him well for this responsibility.%uFFFD Most recently, as you know, he has served as senior associate dean for clinical affairs and chief of staff at Shands at UF. Prior to his administrative service with the College of Medicine he was chief of staff at the Malcom Randall Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where he also served as chief of the anesthesiology service.
Beyond his leadership experience, I have also been impressed with Mike%u2019s personal management style. He is a thoughtful listener and good communicator. He is objective and analytical in his approach to an issue. Careful to seek consensus among different points of view, he is also comfortable making a tough decision when the time comes. Finally, he has a cool head and a calm demeanor that will serve the college well in the coming months.
Mike has many challenges ahead, and I know he will rely heavily on the senior leaders of the college to navigate those seas. In particular, it will be important for the college to maintain momentum on several key initiatives, including the partnership with the Moffitt Cancer Center, the patient safety and quality program, the NIH Clinical and Translational Science award application, and the coordination of clinical activities between Gainesville and Jacksonville. Of course, his assignment will also include filling several open chair positions for which searches are currently under way, as well as associate dean positions for the education and research programs. I am confident that Mike, working in concert with each of you and with our partners, will rise to meet these challenges.
Please join me in congratulating Dr. Mike Good. Thank you.
